Farmhouse Fresh
This drawing room includes 18th-century painted Italian antiques. The walls of the space are treated with pale-blue pigmented plaster, and the total effect is a consummately peaceful sanctuary.
Wide Open Spaces
The architect for this home devised an open plan, with no corridors or hallways and plenty of cross ventilation with its one-room-deep layout.
Colorful Elegance
The living room of this suburban Atlanta home showcases a mix of old and new, fine and whimsical, sleek and rustic. A metal frame updates the classic Louis XVI chair, and a carved wood desk plays off the acrylic coffee table.
Blue and White Sunroom
Despite its small size, this sunroom feels much larger because of its bright white walls and abundance of windows. A radiant heat system is installed under the bluestone pavers to keep this room cozy even during the winter months. The sectional sofa is a custom, built-in look, maximizing the seating space in this small room.
White Coastal Living Room
White paint updates brick walls and ceiling beams in this coastal South Carolina home. The furnishings and textiles channel a French country look with antiques and an array of printed fabrics.
Tropical Prints
Vibrant patterns and large, arched windows make this living room a breathtaking haven. Traditional wingback chairs are juxtaposed with painted white rattan furniture and lantern-style wall sconces for a mixed—but decidedly laid-back—look.
Compact Living
Choosing pieces that can serve multiple functions was important in the design of this San Diego living room. A window seat stores extra blankets, and built-in bookshelves make use of the space flanking the mosaic tile fireplace.
Driftwood Drama
Sitting atop a rug reminiscent of a sandy beach, is a coffee table with a base sculpted out of driftwood. Paired with sea-foam colored walls, this coastal living room reflects the beach in the distance.
Soothing Setting
Perfectly balanced architecture and furniture make a room feel comfortable and serene. Start with a central focal point, such as a fireplace, and build around it.
Living Large
Light wall colors and wide windows make this small condo living room appear much larger. The light blue color of the walls and accent pillows play off of the ocean view, bringing the outside in.
Shutter Central
Add character to sliding porch doors with louvered shutters on rollers that filter out strong morning sunlight. A pair of chaise chairs makes a great place to read a book or take a nap.
Timeless Appeal
This living room is decorated with casual pieces that complement its formal architecture. The neutral palette -- accented with soft blue pillows and accessories -- has the timeless appeal of a sepia-toned photograph.
Tangled Up in Blue
This bright blue paint is kept in balance by the use of white trim and decorative accents. The natural wood furniture and straw baskets also help ground the whimsical color.
Laid-Back Living
This relaxed coastal living room provides a welcoming gathering spot for a family. The ocean, sunset, and beachside location inspired the white, aqua, and persimmon color scheme, which emphasizes the room's spectacular views of the beach.
Cabin Fever
Update a wood-paneled room with bold design. Rich colors and strong graphic elements paired with modern furniture and accessories bring pizzazz to even the simplest cabin. The striped rug breaks up the all-wood room.
Outside In
An oversize cased opening is the best way to take in a view of the beach. Skip patterns entirely and stick with solid fabrics if you really want to simplify. If you find a solid scheme a bit too boring, add a patterned rug.
A New Attitude
Tropical fabrics and muted wall paints update this room without erasing its charm. Think twice before removing classic woodwork;a fresh coat of paint may be all you need to update your space.
Lighthearted Living Room
A wall covered in sunshine yellow suede forms a bold backdrop for the living room’s royal blue upholstery scheme. A yellow lacquered coffee table and yellow trim on the curtains’ cornice add even more punch to the mix.
Elegant Style
In the main living space, pale blue walls soothe the senses and act as a skylike backdrop for off-white furnishings.
